Memorial Service Friday for Former 'L.A. Times' Editorial Cartoonist Interlandi

By: E&P Staff Former Los Angeles Times editorial cartoonist Frank Interlandi will be rememberd Friday during a memorial service to be held at noon at the gazebo in Heisler Park in Laguna Beach.

Interlandi, who lived and worked in Laguna Beach for nearly 60 years, died Feb. 4 at an assisted living facility in Poway, Calif.

After the service, friends will gather at the Marine Room Tavern, where Interlandi would often join a group of fun-loving fellow Laguna Beach, Calif., cartoonists who would slip out for midday gatherings in the 1950s.

The Chicago-born Interlandi worked as an editorial cartoonist for The Des Moines Register -- where he won the 1961 Sigma Delta Chi Award for best editorial cartoon -- before joining the Los Angeles Times in 1962. He remained with the L.A. Times until 1981.

Interlandi's cartoons were syndicated in U.S. newspapers for many years under the title "Below Olympus." He also was a successful abstract Expressionist painter, and exhibited in galleries in Laguna Beach and Los Angeles.
