By: E&P Staff Mike Tharp is the new executive editor of the Merced (Calif.) Sun-Star.
Tharp, 63, has served as the Sun-Star's city editor since June 2007. Before joining the Merced newsroom, he taught journalism for seven years at California State University, Fullerton. Prior to that he was a West Coast correspondent for U.S. News & World Report in Los Angeles for 11 years and also served as its Tokyo bureau chief.
?Mike brings a variety of experience to our newsroom and many ideas that will move us forward as a media company,? Publisher Hank Vander Veen said in a statement.
As a soldier in Vietnam in 1969-70, Tharp wrote for a U.S. Army magazine and was awarded a Bronze Star. He covered four wars for U.S. News in the 1990s, and recently spent six weeks in Iraq as a correspondent for McClatchy Newspapers.
Tharp succeeds Joe Kieta, who joined the Utica, N.Y., Observer-Dispatch in July.
