By: Joe Strupp Kevin Wendt, assistant managing editor for sports and copy and design desks at the San Jose Mercury News, has been named the new top editor at the Huntsville (Ala.) Times, according to a Mercury News staff memo.

The memo, first posted on the Poynter.org Romenesko site, said Wendt would be one of the youngest daily newspaper editors in the country in his new position, but did not give his age.

"Since his arrival at the Mercury News in 2000 -- wearing a degree from Northern Illinois University and a black eye delivered by some thugs he exposed in the campus newspaper -- Kevin has shown an incredible aptitude for this business," the memo said. "He's tackled a variety of roles, from page one designer to his current role as assistant managing editor for Sports, the Copy and Design desks. In between, he's been news design director, an assistant business editor and part-time Page One news editor. Kevin even spent time in Biloxi, Miss., after Hurricane Katrina, helping the Sun Herald in its Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage."

Wendt could not immediately be reached for comment. His new job begins June 18, the memo stated.
