By: Staff Reports Executive Editor Calls Move 'Unavoidable'
More bad news at the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News: the paper is scrapping SV Magazine, its weekly Sunday publication. The newspaper said it will find jobs at the Mercury News for the magazine's nine employees.
In a memo to employees, Senior Vice President and Executive Editor David Yarnold and Managing Editor Susan Goldberg said the cost-cutting move was unavoidable. "When we said earlier this week that there would be no newsroom layoffs, we talked about trade-offs we were making to preserve jobs ... This is one of those trade-offs," the memo said.
The Mercury News has published a weekly magazine since 1969. The final issue will appear April 8.
