MercuryNews.com Launches Photography Site

Posted
By: Lesley Messer The San Jose Mercury News recently launched a new section on its Web site that features a gallery of photographs, multimedia, and audio work from staff photographers.

"The Mercury News had won awards for layout and design and we thought it was a really strong team and a benefit that we could bring to readers," said Regan Senkarik, general manager for mercurynews.com and contracostatimes.com, when asked why the page was introduced.

The Web site also has a week in pictures gallery, in-depth photo stories, essays with audio narration, and the staff's favorite pieces and biographies. The multimedia site can be accessed at www.mercurynewsphoto.com or by a link on the newspaper's home page.

"It's primarily [on a different URL] because the platform has limitations as to how we can manage and serve photos," said Senkarik. ?The team just wanted more robust capability.?

As of now, the team isn't looking at numbers but is hopeful that it's drawing traffic. It's being promoted on the online version of the newspaper and Senkarik said at present there's no ?grand plan? for the future.

?It's more of a service,? she explained. ?We'd like to have another way of engaging readers and provide additional rich content for them in the form of photographs.?
