By: Kenneth H. Robinson III, a veteran Connecticut journalist and deputy managing editor of the Record-Journal newspaper in Meriden, died after collapsing at work on Tuesday, the newspaper said. He was 49.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

"We are in a state of shock over Ken's sudden death," said Managing Editor Ralph Tomaselli. "He was a great newsman and an even better friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ken's family."

Robinson began his career with the Record-Journal as freelancer while still a student at Sheehan High School in Wallingford. He joined the paper full-time after his 1977 graduation and quickly moved through the ranks.

He was named sports editor the following year, at age 19, making him the youngest sports editor in Connecticut. He became design editor in 1985 and held several other management positions en route to becoming the deputy managing editor for the daily newspaper that serves Meriden, Wallingford, Southington and Cheshire.

He is survived by his mother, Vera Robinson, and a brother, Gary Robinson, both of Wallingford.

Funeral services have not been announced.
