By: E&P Staff The Boston Globe, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, and the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune have signed up for Merlin Hosted, moving technical responsibility for picture desks and photo archives to MerlinOne.
The Quincy, Mass., company says it can provide hosted services for less than a newspaper can achieve by owning and managing its own system. "For the first time news organizations will be able to have a world-class application available to their users without the capital burden of continuous server and storage upgrades, without IT department workload, and with totally predictable, low costs," MerlinOne President and CEO David Tenenbaum said in a statement.
In the hosted model, all data is moved to the MerlinOne data center's fault-tolerant systems. Merlin's storage technology cuts the capacity required for a newspaper's digital objects by up to 70%, with the savings passed to the customer, according to the company. The service is housed in a co-location hosting facility with security, generator backup, and connections to four Internet backbones. MerlinOne provides performance guarantees, fault-tolerance, an interface to prepress production systems and direct end-user support.
The complete digital content management system allows users to organize millions of photos, video and audio files, graphics, stories, PDF files and Microsoft Office documents using fast, precise searching with flexible drag-anddrop workflows.
MerlinOne also will host its Trax assignment and workflow system, which supports photo, video, story, audio, graphics, scanning and research assignments and integrates with Merlin, adding rights management, scheduling, and contact information.
