By: Mark Fitzgerald MetroXpress and 24 Timer, two free dailies published by Metro International S.A., are getting subsidies from the Danish government, Metro announced Friday.
It said the two papers qualified for the newly revived state press subsidy, which will amount to combined 4.6 million euros (US$6.1 million).
"The subsidy will be primarily used to re-establish the subscription network cancelled in 2006, when the special subsidy given to Post Danmark for distribution of newspapers was withdrawn by the Danish government," Metro said.
Metro will use the subsidy to expand the distribution of MetroXpress, which it said is the most-read newspaper in Denmark. MetroXpress and 24 Timer have a combined readership of more than 1 million, Metro said.
