Metro Seeks Buyers for U.S. Papers

By: E&P Staff Metro International is reportedly shopping around three of its U.S. properties after the troubled company announced in the fall that it would begin a strategic review of its operations.

Metro publishes free distribution daily newspapers in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.

The Boston Phoenix reported that Clarity Media Group?s Philip Anschutz has allegedly expressed interest in the papers. Clarity Media publishes Examiner newspapers, also free-distribution papers but are mostly home-delivered in cities like San Francisco and Washington D.C..

Both publishers of the Boston and New York Metros said they did not know about an upcoming sale.
Metro Boston Publisher Stuart Layne told The Boston Globe, "My understanding is that Metro has been looking for investors and partners in the U.S. to expand its U.S. operations."

The New York Times Co. owns a 49% stake in Metro Boston. Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for the Times Co., declined to comment to the Globe. The New York Times owns the Globe.
