Isabella Cota, a top investigative journalist in Mexico, has joined the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists as Latin America coordinator. She brings a wealth of experience in economic and investigative reporting.

“Isabella brings to ICIJ a deep knowledge of Latin America that will help her to coordinate with our partners throughout the region with insight and care,” said ICIJ Managing Editor Fergus Shiel. “She also has experience delivering different story formats, knowledge that is certain to amplify our original, revelatory reporting in novel ways.”

Cota’s work spans multiple countries, including Costa Rica, Mexico, the Netherlands and the U.S., where she has reported for major outlets including Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters, Radio Netherlands and, most recently, El País.

Her focus on policy, business and financial markets has consistently driven impactful stories.

“Most journalists have to do a thousand things at the same time,” Cota said. “To be able to have a job where you can focus on investigative reporting and the facilitating of it across a large region is very exciting.”

Based in Mexico City, she will work closely with ICIJ members and media partners across Latin America, developing story ideas, writing and editing, and fostering collaborative opportunities.

“Her appointment signals ICIJ’s ongoing, deep engagement with reporters and newsrooms across the region,” Shiel said.
