The Miami Herald yesterday named Martin Baron the new executive editor, effective January. A former Herald employee, Baron is currently associate managing editor of The New York Times.

Herald Publisher Alberto Ibargen said Baron is ?an extraordinary editor who has proven himself at some of the finest papers in the country.?

A Florida native, Baron began his career at the Herald as a business and state reporter. He later worked at the Los Angeles Times, where he served in several positions before becoming editor of the Orange County edition.

In a statement, Knight Ridder Chairman Tony Ridder said Baron's ?drive to become fluent in Spanish, and his travel to Latin American countries, reflect an appetite for precisely the kinds of challenges and excitement that Miami offers.?
