By: (AP) Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Publisher Keith Spore will retire at the end of the year, the company said.

Steven J. Smith, Journal Communications Inc. chairman and CEO, made the announcement at the company's annual meeting Thursday.

A spokesman, Bob Dye, said both internal and external candidates would be considered to replace Spore.

Spore, 61, began as an editorial messenger at the Milwaukee Sentinel while a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He worked as a reporter there and eventually became its editor.

When the Sentinel merged with The Milwaukee Journal in 1995, he was named editorial page editor of the combined paper, then became president of Journal Sentinel Inc. He became publisher in June 1996.

He is also president of Journal Sentinel Inc. and senior vice president of Journal Communications.

As publisher, Spore oversaw its largest capital project ever -- the construction of a $113 million production plant in West Milwaukee.

Journal Communications also operates radio and television stations, shopping and weekly newspapers, and commercial printing, telecommunications and database marketing businesses.
