By: The Duluth News Tribune's circulation department has ordered ice cleats for its newspaper carriers after one of them slipped on the ice and later died.
Robert Johnson was nearly finished delivering papers Jan. 31 when he slipped and hit his head. He went into a coma soon after and died two days later after losing a lot of blood, the Duluth News Tribune reported.
Greg Switzer, a supervisor in the newspaper's circulation department, said carriers have been reporting slippery conditions. But losing Johnson, who had worked with the paper for more than 20 years, was a shock, he said.
"He was a good guy," Switzer said.
Dr. Faris Keeling, an emergency physician at St. Mary's, said there have been a high number of injuries in the area due to ice conditions. A series of cool-downs and warm-ups have caused icy conditions on Duluth sidewalks.
