Mirror Awards Drop Entry Fee, Expand Web Categories

By: Joe Strupp The three-year-old Mirror Awards, sponsored by the Syracuse University S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications to honor coverage of the media, is expanding to include more Web categories, while dropping its entry fee.

?We made the changes based on feedback from past entrants," said award organizer Jean Brooks. "From what they told us, we understood that waiving the entry fee would make the competition more accessible--especially to smaller media and independent journalists. And by adding new categories for digital media, we hope to create more accessibility for the relatively nascent field of new media.?

The past awards had required a $50 fee for each entry and provided no web-only categories.

This year, the prizes will be given for both digital and "traditional" winners in categories that include: best single article, best profile, best commentary, and best in-depth piece.

There also is a people's choice award, in which finalists will be posted on the Web for public input.
