'Miss Manners' to Receive Medal at White House

By: E&P Staff "Miss Manners" columnist Judith Martin will be among the recipients of a 2005 National Humanities Medal from President Bush at an Oval Office ceremony slated for Thursday.

Martin -- whose etiquette-advice column appears in more than 200 newspapers via United Media -- said in a statement: "I am enormously gratified at this recognition that civility is not a trivial issue for our society. Now if everyone would just practice it, we'd be all set."

In addition to writing her thrice-weekly United feature, Martin does columns for the Microsoft Network and Child Magazine. The former Washington Post staffer has also authored 12 books -- including "Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior (Freshly Updated)," published this year by W.W. Norton.

Martin is the only newspaper columnist getting this year's National Humanities Medal. Among the other 2005 honorees are a political scientist, a U.S. Marine colonel, and several professors and authors. A 12th recipient is "The Papers of George Washington Project" at the University of Virginia.
