'Missoulian' Names Two to New Newsroom Posts

By: A longtime writer and editor for the Missoulian John Smithers has been named city editor.

The Missoulian also announced the hiring of a new assistant city editor, Gwen Florio. She is now chief of the Great Falls Tribune's Capitol Bureau in Helena.

Smithers began working at the Missoulian in 1991 as a part-timer with the sports department. He was named assistant city editor in 2006. Smithers began as city editor July 1st.

Florio has been a reporter since 1976. She's worked for The Associated Press, Philadelphia Bulletin, Philadelphia Inquirer, the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News.

Her assignments have included the Freemen standoff in Montana, the shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado, and foreign assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia.

Florio will join the Missoulian newsroom July 30th.
