By: Kathryn Wade 'Star Ledger,' 'Seattle Times' Among Winners
The Missouri School of Journalism announced the winners of the
2001 Missouri Lifestyle Journalism Awards on Thursday. More than
1,500 entries were submitted for the 15 awards, six for general
excellence and nine for writing. The winners:
General Excellence Class I (circ. under 25,000): The
Litchfield County Times, New Milford, Conn. "This is by far
the best written and best packaged newspaper of all the entries.
The presentation has a magazine feel to it. The array of features
fits the lifestyle of the communities served. The staff does a
great job for a circulation of this size," remarked one judge.
General Excellence Class II (circ. 25,001 to 50,000): Daily
Camera, Boulder, Colo. The judges said, "The topics and
packages were perfect for the sections. We found great use of
topography for each section. The topography was content driven,
evoking emotion and spirit."
General Excellence Class III (circ. 50,001 to 100,000):
Cleveland Scene, Cleveland. "The 30-year commemorative on
the Kent State University was exceptional journalism. And it was
indicative of the overall excellence of the newspaper," judges
said.
General Excellence Class IV (circ. 100,001 to 300,000): The
Seattle Times, Seattle. The judges were impressed with the
"interesting range of stories" and the strong use of graphics
throughout the features section.
General Excellence Class V (circ. 300,001 plus): The Star
Ledger, Newark, N.J. "The reading is rewarding. The Star-
Ledger writers and editors drop things along the trail --
just a little something every few paragraphs for little rewards.
They are clearly trying hard to make something out of every
feature, every story," commented one judge.
Regularly Scheduled Feature Supplement: Los Angeles Times
Magazine, Los Angeles. Judges reported, "Brilliantly written,
edited, photographed, and designed. The supplement is completely
in touch with its market."

Gazette. Reading the Book of Life.
