Montreal 'La Presse' Dropping Sundays

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald La Presse, the Montreal French-language daily that is Quebec's second-largest paper, is ending its Sunday edition.

The final Sunday paper will be published June 28.

Publisher Guy Crevier told staffers that dropping Sundays will save about C$3 million (US$2.65 million) annually.

La Presse, he added, is losing about C$2 million a month. The paper, owned by Gesco media group, has said it intends to wring $26 million in expenses, including $13 million in concessions from employees.

Unlike the United States, where Sunday is the fattest paper, Saturday is the week's biggest edition in Canada. The Globe and Mail quoted Crevier as saying the move was intended to uphold the quality of its printed editions even as it was forced to cut costs.

"So instead of picking away at all of our editions, cutting back on the Monday paper, the Tuesday paper, etc., we decided to cut the Sunday paper, which generates very little revenue for us," he said, according to the account by Susan Krashinsky.
