More Bold-Face Names Emerge in 'News of the World' Phone Hacking

By: E&P Staff More names emerged over the weekend as targets of the alleged phone hacking by a News of the World reporter -- including supermodel Elle Macpherson, the mayor of London and a senior BBC executives.

The Sunday Times, owned, like News of the World, by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation, reported a police investigation into the phone hacking has compiled three lists of public figures the tabloid's reporter, Clive Goodman, allegedly either successfully hacked, tried and failed to hack or apparently wanted to hack but was unable to get a phone number for the celebrity.

Goodman and private investigator Glenn Mulcaire were sentenced to prison in 2007 as a result of the scandal. Interest in the hacking was revived when The Guardian newspaper last week reported a News Corp. unit had paid 1 million pounds to settle privacy actions brought by a soccer league executive and two other figures whose cell phones were hacked.

According to the Sunday Times, police in Britain have uncovered a list of people whose phones were illegally accessed. The list includes Boris Johnson, recently elected mayor of London; Macpherson, a Liberal Democrat member of Parliament; a sports agent; and a celebrity publicist. The Times report said a "senior executive" at the BBC was on the list, but the paper did not disclose the name.
