By: E&P Staff The Chicago Tribune fired at least 10 newsroom employee Thursday, including a Pulitzer Prize winner and the correspondents in the Middle East and Rome.

According to an account in the blog Chicago Reader media critic Mike Miner, the layoffs, announced to employees, include Don Terry, who joined the paper eight years ago from The New York Times where shared in the Pulitzer Prize for the series on race.

Correspondents Joel Greenberg in Jerusalem and Christine Spolar in Rome were among those let go. The bureaus will be closed down.

Miner reported that Chicago Tribune Magazine writer Jeff Lyon and senior writer Charles Leroux are departing under a buyout they had accepted in December, but that was withdrawn when Tribune Co. filed for bankruptcy protection in December.

Tribune recently won bankruptcy court permission to pay buyout offers, though the severance terms were reduced to one week's basic salary for every year of service.

A Tribune Co. spokesman declined to confirm the layoffs or comment on them.
