More Layoffs: 'Providence Journal' to Slash 100

By: The owner of the Providence Journal will lay off about 100 workers at Rhode Island's largest newspaper in an effort to deal with declining advertising revenue.

The Providence Business News on Tuesday reported that newspaper publisher A.H. Belo plans to eliminate the jobs by March 6.

The Dallas-based company had said in January it plans to lay off 500 workers, or about 14% of its work force, and implement other cash-saving measures.

Last week, the company reported a fourth-quarter loss of $33.1 million, or $1.62 per share, citing a difficult advertising market and a slew of charges.

The company's other newspaper holdings include those in Texas and California.

Spokeswoman Maribel Correa did not immediately respond to an e-mail and voice message left after business hours.
