By: E&P Staff Reuters News' New York newsroom was evacuated Monday after it received an envelope with a "puff of powder" in it, the news agency reported.
Police evacuated staffers from the 19th-floor Manhattan newsroom after Brian Rhoads, Reuters' managing editor for the Americas, opened an envelope and a "puff of powder" came out of it, company spokeswoman Jolie Hunt confirmed to Reuters reporters.
The newsroom's 140 staffers were told to leave as a precautionary measure while police investigate.
The Reuters scare follows a similar one last Thursday, when The New York Times received a letter addressed to Editorial Page Editor Andrew Rosenthal that contained a white granular substance. The lobby of the Times' headquarters building in Midtown Manhattan was closed for nearly four hours.
During the incident, three Times employees were asked to take showers as a precaution against contamination.
