By: E&P Staff "Wee Pals" cartoonist Morrie Turner will visit Pittsburgh's ToonSeum on Feb. 16.
The Creators Syndicate cartoonist, whose work is being exhibited at the museum through Feb. 27, will take part in a Feb. 16 panel discussion on African Americans in comics and editorial cartoons.
Joining Turner will be "Jump Start" creator Robb Armstrong of United Media and former editorial cartoonist Don Peoples. A reception will follow the discussion.
Turner's 1965-launched "Wee Pals" is considered the first nationally syndicated strip with a truly integrated cast. Armstrong's comic features a loving African-American couple and their children.
The exhibit is made possible by Jean Schulz (widow of "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz); the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, Calif.; the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh; Rose Marie McDaniel (widow of comic writer and cartoon collector Mark Cohen); the Cartoon Art Museum of San Francisco; and The ToonSeum Drawing Board Fund.
The ToonSeum is housed inside the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh.
