(Mediaweek Online) Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., which already holds one television station and a major tabloid newspaper, the New York Post, has filed with the Federal Communications Commission to gain approval of acquiring another station for its portfolio.

The Washington Post reports that in seeking approval of its $5.3 billion purchase of Chris Craft Industries, News Corp. told the FCC that it intends to add Chris Craft's WWOR, currently a UPN affiliate, to its stable. If the FCC were to allow News Corp. to own all three, it could open the floodgates for other companies like Gannett and Tribune to pursue multiple ownership as well.

News Corp.'s current ownership of two media properties in New York was due to a waiver in 1993 that was granted on the belief that the Post would have fallen by the wayside, save News Corp.'s rescue.
