Hours before Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive of News Corporation, faces shareholders at the company’s annual meeting, the company announced Friday that it would pay $3.2 million to the family of Milly Dowler, the murdered British teenager whose phone was hacked by News Corporation’s News of the World tabloid.
News International, the company’s British newspaper unit, said in a statement that in addition to the payment to the family, Mr. Murdoch would personally donate $1.6 million to charities of the Dowler family’s choosing.
