'Muskogee (Okla.) Phoenix' To Be Sold By Gannett Co. Inc.

By: Joe Strupp Gannett Co. Inc. plans to sell The Muskogee (Okla.) Phoenix by May 1, the paper reported today, noting that it has five potential suitors. A Gannett official explained that the sale is being sought, in part, because the Phoenix has no real clustering options.

"It was nothing about the people or the paper," Dan Ehrman Jr., vice president of planning and development for Gannett, said in today's paper. "We're looking to build tighter clusters. We suspected there would be a lot of interest in the Phoenix, and there has been."

Phoenix Publisher Larry Corvi was quoted as saying four of the five interested buyers "are traditional, national newspaper companies." But he did not identify them. "We've been very sought after," he added.

Gannett bought the Phoenix in 1977 and transferred it to the Gannett Foundation this week, a process the company uses while establishing the sale of smaller newspapers.
