Myanmar’s War on the Press

As Myanmar heads toward national elections scheduled for November, the government of President Thein Sein is intensifying attempts to thwart the democratic aspirations of Myanmar’s people.

Last Thursday, the country’s military blocked moves to rescind its veto power in Parliament. It also used its control of Parliament to prevent the amendment of a law that prohibits the opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi from becoming president or vice president by making any person whose spouse or children have “allegiance to a foreign power” ineligible.
