NAA HONORS NEWSPAPER LEADERS

The 2001 Newspaper Association of America/Editor & Publisher
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented Monday to Robert W.
Althaus, vice president/circulation for Gannett Co. Inc.

The award is presented every two years and is chosen by the board
of NAA's Circulation Federation.

A 25-year newspaper industry veteran, Althaus was cited by his
peers for his efforts on circulation issues, including the use of
readership as a means of measuring newspapers' reach. Previously,
he worked for Detroit Newspapers, the St. Petersburg
(Fla.) Times, and Philadelphia Newspapers Inc.

Also Monday, the NAA's Market Development & Promotion Federation
Distinguished Achievement Award went to Susie Ellwood, vice
president/market development for Detroit Newspapers. She
previously worked for the Little Rock Arkansas Gazette.

And the NAA's Display Federation presented the Newspaper
Advertising Leadership Award to Gene H. Grant, advertising
director for The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee. He
previously worked for Sparks Newspapers and the Riverside
(Calif.) Press-Enterprise.

Finally, Willard Scott, the former "Today Show" weatherman, was
inducted into the NAA's Newspaper Carrier Hall of Fame. Scott
said that his first job was delivering the Alexandria
(Va.) Gazette and The Washington Post.
