By: E&P Staff The Newspaper Association of America reported that total newspaper advertising revenue grew 1.4% to $14.3 billion in Q4 2005, largely due to spending online.
Print newspaper advertising revenue was barely up 0.4% to $13.7 billion in Q4 compared to the same period the previous year. Online advertising jumped 32.5% to $522 million.
For the year, total newspaper advertising revenue advanced 2.5% to $49.4 billion. Online ad revenues rose 31.5% to $2 billion - a record, the NAA noted. "This is our seventh consecutive quarter of [double digit] online ad spending increases, and we expect this upward trend to continue," CEO John Sturm said in a statement.
In Q4, excluding online, retail advertising revenue slipped 1.3% to $6.4 billion. National was slightly down, 0.5% to $2.1 billion. Classified grew 3% to $5.2 billion.
Within the classified category, employment advertising rose 8.5% to $1.5 billion. Real estate increased 16% to $1.5 billion. Automotive decreased 16% to $1.3 billion.
For 2005, the retail category was up 0.8% to $22.2 billion. National dropped 2.1% to $7.9 billion, while classified grew 4.2% to $17.3 billion.
