Online news operations are scrambling to get their wireless news operations off the
ground as Web-ready cellular phones infiltrate the market.

The latest newspaper company to do wireless news is Nando Media, The McClatchy Co.'s
interactive media division. Nando launched a 24-hour wireless news service for
Web-enabled cellular phone and pager users.

The service uses wireless application protocol (WAP) technology to give telephone
users access to headlines from The Nando Times, McClatchy's online news source. The
site to access the service is at http://www.gptwm.com, a URL based on letters that
form a smile on a cellphone keypad for easy memory.

'This is a natural extension of The Nando Times and a clear example of our desire to
provide news content to out audience in any Web-based format,' says James A. Green,
president and publisher of Nando. 'Now our readers can get the same timely, quality
news updates from The Nando Times whether they are at their computer or on the go.'

Nando is based in Raleigh, N.C., and has been publishing news online since 1994. Its
parent company, The McClatchy Co., is based in Sacramento, Calif., and publishes 11
daily and 12 non-daily newspapers.
