NARRATIVE JOURNALISM CONFERENCE TO EXPAND

The increasingly popular Narrative Journalism conference
organized by Mark Kramer will expand as it moves from Boston
University to Harvard University's Nieman Foundation. Kramer, who
had been writer-in-residence at Boston University, is planning
the next conference for Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

This will be the fourth such session, which last year drew more
than 750 working journalists from around the world to two days of
panels and talks. The conferences cover the art, craft, ethics,
and commerce of narrative nonfiction, which Kramer contends can
increase newspaper readership by "stepping past tired conventions
of expression, past fragmented presentation of complex stories,
and offering engaging coverage that weaves human experience
through the politics, power, and technology and events of the
day. "

Speakers have included Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award
winners, as well as prominent newspaper and book editors. Kramer
has written for The New York Times and The Boston
Globe Sunday magazines, written several non-fiction books,
and edited the "Literary Journalism" anthology. He had conducted
workshops for Nieman Fellows and taught a popular writing seminar
at Boston University.
