By: E&P Staff The National Press Club launches its road show with its first stop in Chicago June 4 as it celebrates its centennial with a series of forums around the nation.
The group's goal is to hold a National Press Centennial Forum in all 50 states, presenting a documentary on its history and then hosting a discussion among journalists about free press and journalism issues.
At the Chicago event, to be held at Columbia College, the scheduled panelists are Cyrus Freidheim, president and CEO of Sun-Times Media Group; Bill Adee, associate managing editor for innovation at the Chicago Tribune; Renee Ferguson, investigative reporter for NBC News Channel 5; and Vivian Vahlberg, managing director of Northwestern University's Media Management Center.
The event will begin with the showing of the Club's documentary, "A Century of Headlines." Information about the events is available on the Club?s Web site, www.press.org.
"For a century, the Club has provided a neutral forum for national and international leaders to talk to the world through the news media," Club President Sylvia Smith said in a statement. "With this program, we encourage public discussion about the core values and future of journalism."
Founded in 1908, the Club has 3,700 members, and holds more than 2,000 events including news conferences, luncheons and panels at its Washington, D.C., building.
