By: E&P Staff Updated at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Sept. 23: Due to incorrect information in a press release, the original version of this story incorrectly said Natoli would hold the title of president.

Knight Ridder on Monday named Joe Natoli chairman and publisher of Philadelphia Newspapers Inc., effective Jan. 1. Natoli currently is publisher of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, where he has been since 2001.

Natoli, 48, will replace Robert J. Hall, who recently announced his retirement.

Philadelphia Newspapers publishes the Inquirer and Daily News.

Previously, Natoli was president of The Miami Herald Publishing Co., where he began his career as a staff accountant and worked his way through the ranks.

Knight Ridder Chairman and CEO Tony Ridder said Natoli "is one of the most seasoned newspaper executives in our industry ... [with] a keen eye for the editorial process."
