By: Donald W. Nauss, deputy managing editor of The Detroit News, was promoted Wednesday to managing editor.

Nauss, 59, succeeds Sue Burzynski, who left the News to teach at Michigan State University.

Jonathan Wolman, the publisher and editor of the News, said he and Nauss "have an ambitious multimedia agenda" for the newspaper and its Web site.

Nauss joined the News in 1999 and has served as auto editor, business editor, assistant managing editor and deputy managing editor.

"This is a great opportunity in a difficult period for newspapers," Nauss said. "The News has a long tradition of producing strong enterprise and major projects that keep our readers informed on important issues.

"I intend to build on that legacy while also moving the newspaper aggressively into the expanding online world."

Nauss spent 10 years with the Los Angeles Times as a reporter and editor, including six years as Detroit bureau chief covering the auto industry, Michigan and the Midwest.

The Pennsylvania native also has worked at the Dallas Times Herald, Orlando Sentinel, Philadelphia Bulletin and several smaller newspapers. He earned a bachelor's degree from Penn State University and a master's degree from Ohio State University.
