NBC/WSJ Poll Finds Bush Ratings Still Sinking

Posted
By: E&P Staff For the first time in the NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, President Bush?s approval rating slipped below 40%, while the percentage believing the country is heading in the right direction has dipped below 30% percent.

Nearly 6 in 10 want the U.S. to start withdrawing troops from Iraq.

In addition, a sizable plurality prefers a Democratic-controlled Congress, and just 29% think Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers is qualified to serve on that court, although nearly half say they don't know enough about her to judge.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points and was conducted from Oct. 8-10.

Another finding: 65% percent say that Rep. Tom DeLay?s indictment on charges of illegally using corporate contributions for political campaigns suggests potential illegal activity, while 24% say the indictment is politics as usual. Somewhat fewer (57%) say Sen. Bill Frist?s sale of stock in a company his family runs ? just before the value of the stock declined ? indicates potential illegal activity.
