NCS Picks Five Cartoonists as Reuben Award Finalists

By: E&P Staff Five creators have been nominated for the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award as cartoonist of the year.

They include editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Creators Syndicate as well as four comic cartoonists: Bill Amend ("FoxTrot"/Universal Press Syndicate), Dave Coverly ("Speed Bump"/Creators), Brian Crane ("Pickles"/Washington Post Writers Group), and Dan Piraro ("Bizarro"/King Features Syndicate).

The Reuben will be presented May 27 in Chicago, where winners of a dozen category awards also will be named.

Nominees in the editorial cartooning division include Jim Borgman of The Cincinnati Enquirer and King, former Los Angeles Times staffer Michael Ramirez of Investor's Business Daily and Copley News Service, and John Sherffius of Copley.

Comic strip finalists are Borgman and Jerry Scott ("Zits"/King), Michael Fry and T Lewis ("Over the Hedge"/United Media), and Brooke McEldowney ("9 Chickweed Lane"/United).

Comic panel finalists are Mark Parisi ("off the mark"/United), Hilary Price ("Rhymes With Orange"/King), and Jerry Van Amerongen ("Ballard Street"/Creators).
