Nearly 60 Apply For ASNE Executive Director Post

By: Joe Strupp Nearly 60 applicants have submitted resumes to become executive director of the American Society of News Editors, according to Scott Bosley, the outgoing executive director who will retire at the end of 2009.

With the deadline on July 3, Bosley said staffers were still going through the submissions, but estimated they would come close to 60.

"My sense is that there are a lot of strong applicants," he said, declining to name any. "I think there are a lot of good ones. Some of the people do not fit all of the criteria, but a number of good ones do."

On the number of applicants, he said: "In this environment, I expected a good number of people looking to change careers and others who just want the opportunity."

Bosley, who announced his retirement several months ago, has held the job since 1999. At 66, he plans to retire and made clear earlier this year that the nature of the industry is changing, requiring ASNE to change as well.

ASNE has already made significant moves this year, removing the 'Newspaper" from its name and opening membership to online news outlets and academics.

Bosley has also said the annual convention, cancelled this year, is likely to be a broader event when it is held in April 2010, expanding to include different media issues.

Bosley said the ASNE search committee, which includes President Martin Kaiser, will review the applicants and likely make a choice by September.
