By: Jim Rosenberg Following relocation of printing early last month to Bellevue, Nebraska's Midland Newspapers Inc. will move its weekly and twice-weekly newspapers later this month to the building in Papillion that now houses its own offices.
The company said it considered renovating its Times Publishing unit's facility in Papillion -- its home for more than 100 years, according to the Ralston Recorder -- but determined that the building offered inadequate space for expansion.
Times Publishing titles have been folded into Suburban Newspapers, which includes the Bellevue Leader and Suburban Newspaper Printing, according to Publisher Shon Barenklau. Suburban Newspapers is a subsidiary of Midland Newspapers, which is a subsidiary of the Omaha World-Herald Co.
While the papers serving Papillion, Ralston, La Vista, Springfield, Gretna, and Bellevue consolidate much of their news and business operations in Papillion, production operations were transferred with the company's Goss Community SSC press from the Papillion Times to Bellevue almost a month ago.
Equivalent to 14 units, the press prints almost 130,000 copies per week -- approximately 40% of which are the group's titles and the remainder devoted to commercial work, according to Barenklau. The new plant, he said, was built as "an addition to the Bellevue Leader newspaper. We built a production facility on the back of that ... office."
