By: Terry Smith, the president and chief operating officer of the Marietta Daily Journal and Neighborhood Newspaper group, is leaving the company after 27 years.

Smith will become the chief executive officer of the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Atlanta.

He joined the company in 1981 as director of advertising for the company's Neighborhood newspaper in Rockdale County. In 1982, he became advertising director of the Journal and its Neighborhood newspapers and became president and COO in 1997.

Otis A. Brumby Jr., the Marietta newspaper's chief executive officer and publisher, said, "We regret very much that Terry Smith is leaving the company after 27 highly productive years."

He said Smith was instrumental in the newspaper's conversion to a totally electronically produced product in 1998.

In his new job with the Multiple Sclerosis Center, Smith will manage operations, develop partnerships and oversee fundraising to help build the endowment.

The Marietta Daily Journal also publishes the Cherokee Tribune.
