By: E&P Staff Neil Chase will join NYTimes.com as deputy editor for news, Len Apcar, the site's editor in chief, announced in an email to his staff today.

Chase is currently a managing editor at MarketWatch.com, based in San Francisco. For the past five years, he's overseen 50 journalists in nine bureaus for the financial-news Web site, and he was previously an editor at the San Francisco Examiner and an instructor at the Medill School at Northwestern.

"He certainly understands news and the lovable quirks of newsroom cultures," wrote Apcar in his email. "But he also appreciates the immense competitive landscape that print and online newspaper sites face. He knows that big success here not only requires us to be first and smart, but to collaborate across departments to build something truly great for The Times."

Chase will start at the Times "around" May 1, Apcar's memo said.
