New Bio Chronicles Life of Legendary Newspaperman Horace Greeley

Posted
By: E&P Staff "Horace Greeley: Champion of American Freedom" -- billed as "the first comprehensive biography ... in nearly half a century" of the newspaperman -- will be published June 2 by New York University Press.

Greeley (1811-1872) was founding editor of the New York Tribune, where he became known for his strong editorials in favor of social-reformist causes such as workers' rights and the abolition of slavery. He also took conservative Whig positions such as advocating for protective tariffs.

In addition, Robert C. Williams' 411-page hardcover chronicles Greeley's experiences as a young printer from New Hampshire, intellectual, and politician -- including his 1872 campaign for president. He lost badly to Ulysses Grant, and died a month later.

Quotations attributed to Greeley include "Go west, young man"; "I am the inferior of any man whose rights I trample underfoot"; "Journalism will kill you, but it will keep you alive while you're at it"; and "I founded the New York Tribune as a journal removed alike from servile partisanship on the one hand and from gagged and mincing neutrality on the other."
