By: E&P Staff "Jackie Ormes: The First African American Woman Cartoonist" is being published by the University of Michigan Press.
Ormes was the creator of cartoon characters such as Torchy Brown. Her work was featured in African-American newspapers such as the Chicago Defender and Pittsburgh Courier between 1937 and 1956.
The Nancy Goldstein-authored biography includes more than 120 of Ormes' cartoons, some in color. Topics of the drawings include fashion, human foibles, racism, politics, foreign policy, pollution, and more.
