As of June 14, full access to the Website of Southern Newspapers' New Braunfels (Texas) Herald-Zeitung is available to subscribers only.
Writing for www.herald-zeitung.com the night of June 13, Autumn Phillips reported that subscribers would be charged nothing for access, while nonsubscribers may either subscribe or buy a day pass for 24-hour access.
Operating for more than 10 years, with most of the content of the six-day print publication - the state's fourth oldest in continuous publication - herald-zeitung.com was expanded in May to include everything in the newspaper, extra features, video reports and reader comments, as well as access to an electronic replica of each day's printed edition. Besides offering page turning, magnification and translation into several languages, the "e-edition" is available at no cost to subscribers on the Kindle, iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices, and can optionally e-mail readers when specified news or ad content appears in the paper.
The expanded site has been open to all visitors at no charge for four weeks.
Phillips quoted Publisher Doug Toney saying that "we have more than 50 full-time and part-time employees at the Herald-Zeitung. It became evident that if we wanted to continue to grow, we had to change our business model."
