By: E&P Staff Virgil Smith was promoted to chairman of the Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times. He has been president and publisher of the paper since 1996. Smith was also named vice president of talent management at Gannett, the parent company of the Citizen-Times.
Jeffrey Green, senior vice president of advertising and marketing for the Honolulu Advertiser, replaces Smith as president and publisher of the Citizen-Times.
?Gannett?s corporate staff will be getting an experienced hand in Virgil, whose background and education are in human resources,? Roxanne Horning, senior vice president of human resources at Gannett, said in a statement.
Prior to serving as publisher in Asheville, Smith was president and publisher of the company?s paper in Stockton, Calif. He also worked in management positions at the Sacramento (Calif.) Bee and the Fresno (Calif.) Bee.
Before the Honolulu Advertiser, Green worked in marketing and advertising at The Journal in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Washington Times, and at Madison (Wis.) Newspapers.
