By: E&P Staff Herald Media Inc. appointed Kenneth A. Chandler, former editor and publisher of the New York Post, to editorial director, overseeing editorial operations at the Boston Herald and other properties in eastern Massachussetts.

Herald Editor Andrew F. Costello is leaving the paper. Chandler, Herald editor from 1986 to 1992, will temporarily fill that role, said Patrick J. Purcell, president of Herald Media and the Herald's publisher. A new editor will be named later.

Costello joined the Herald in 1983 and has served as its top editor for 10 years.

Purcell praised Costello's stewardship of the paper and cited Chandler's success. "His initial stewardship of the [New York] Post when it was reacquired by News Corp. back in 1993 really got it going in a meaningful way," Purcell told the Herald. "And given the history that he and I have had together, I hope we can begin to move the Herald that way as well."

Herald Media publishes six dailies, 89 weeklies and 21 specialty publications.
