By: E&P Staff Lehman Communications' Longmont Times-Call will install a Muller martini SLS3000 inserter in the production plant now under construction.
The SLS3000 was chosen "because its net throughputs were significantly higher than any other inserters we saw at other installations running similar products," Mailroom Supervisor Randy Sannes said in a statement. Noting continued growth in freestanding inserts, Sannes said more capacity was needed, and that the equipment's efficiency would enable 20-30% staff reductions. He also pointed to the inserter's "significantly lower" feed height and optimal use of hopper loaders.
The plant also will print Lehman Communications' Loveland Reporter-Herald, Lafayette News; Louisville Times, Erie Review, and Superior Observer.
The Times-Call has used Muller Martini equipment for more than 20 years. The SLS3000 will join an SLS2000.
The modular SLS3000 can be configured with one or two deliveries for speeds up to 32,000 or 64,000 cycles per hour. More than 50 feeders can be switched on and off during operation and synchronized with the pockets. They allow scaleable settings and on-the-fly adjustment.
The linear SLS3000 uses servodrive technology. It can be loaded directly from the press or automatically from FlexiRoll buffer stations and can be operated off-line with streamfeeders. A programmable misfeed and double-feed detection system monitors inserting. Integrated The Missed Insert Repair System automatically recognizes missed inserts and repairs them in a second pass, reducing manual intervention and waste.
