WAN-IFRA and the Society for News Design (SND) has joined hands to organize the first ever “News Design Conference” in South Asia. The event will be held at New Delhi from January 23-24, 2012.

The conference will have focus sessions on newspaper design and redesign, information graphics and designing for online and tablets. The role of the newspaper designer is changing and, with increasing consumption of news on internet, mobile and tablets, it calls for new ways to present news design that appeals to traditional and new age readers.

Best practices from around the world and award winning design ideas will be presented at the conference. Confirmed speakers include Tyson Evans of The New York Times’ Interactive News Desk, Adonis Durado of Times of Oman, Abel Robinson of MINT from HT Media Ltd, Deepak Harichandan of The Times of India, Douglas Okasaki of Gulf News, Hans Peter Janisch, newspaper designer from Germany and Sukriti Gupta of MMI Online from Jagran Prakashan, India.

Full details can be found at http://www.wan-ifra.org/events/news-design-conference.

"We're very excited about this collaboration with WAN-IFRA, especially because of the very talented selection of speakers and the venue. It's an exciting time for newspapers in India and South Asia right now and we're pleased to be involved with this special training effort and look forward to future projects and engagement in the region moving forward," said Steve Dorsey, president of SND.

The Conference Chairperson, Hans Peter Janisch, the former International Director of SND, said the event will be a “not to be missed” one for all visual journalists and editors.

“This region has a vibrant and growing news publishing industry with a lot of talent. Events like these will act as a bridge between the latest global news design trends and the regional design sensibilities”, says Magdoom Mohamed, Managing Director of WAN-IFRA South Asia.

The Conference will be followed by a one-day workshop, where participants will analyse their publications and have the opportunity to work on the design under the guidance of the trainer. The workshop will give the participants a critique on their typography, visual storytelling, use of colour and newspaper and story structuring. It will also help to correct practical problems in the daily workflow of the design desk.

Special offers and early bird discounts are available until 20-December-2011.
