Updated at 4:15 p.m.The new editor of
The Denver Post will be announced Monday, Publisher William Dean Singleton revealed Friday.
Singleton's announcement came a day after Glenn Guzzo, current editor of the
Post, confirmed he would leave his position at the newspaper in 30 days.
Guzzo said he had come to a mutual agreement with Singleton over his resignation. He added that "Dean Singleton wants to hire his own editor."
"We had a frank conversation about my future at the
Post and it became clear that this was the way to go," Guzzo, 51, told
E&P.
Singleton described Guzzo as a very good editor, but said he wanted to choose someone who shared his view of the paper's future. "I own the restaurant, I hire the chef," he said. "But I've got to like the food."
Singleton said his choice for the new editor is someone not currently at the
Post or any of his other MediaNews Group publications.
Guzzo came to the
Post in August 1999 from the
Akron (Ohio)
Beacon Journal, where he served as managing editor. He replaced Dennis Britton as the
Post's editor.
Guzzo would not describe his departure as a firing or forced exit, preferring to call it a mutual separation. His departure comes a little more than a year after the
Post entered into a joint operating agreement (JOA) with its former crosstown rival, the
Rocky Mountain News. Around the time the JOA became effective, Singleton replaced Gerald Grilly in the publisher's position, while retaining his longtime positions as vice chairman and CEO of Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc., which owns the
Post and 45 other daily newspapers in 10 states.
Guzzo said he hopes to find another editing job, but may go into teaching or return to writing. "It's undetermined," he said. "I have to see what's out there."
