By: E&P Staff A yet-to-publish newspaper has scheduled a press conference for Friday morning at its Royal Oak, Mich., headquarters.
Announced in early June, The Detroit Daily Press expected a mid-summer launch -- but the new daily should be ready soon. Managing Editor Bruce McLaughlan told Crain's Detroit Business last week that offices are being equipped, a newsroom created, and ads sold. A veteran of four Michigan dailies, McLaughlan spent 13 years at The Detroit News, serving as deputy features editor when he left in 2000.
The Associated Press originally reported that brothers Mark and Gary Stern, publishers of dailies in Detroit, New York and elsewhere during strikes, would launch a 50-cent Detroit daily ($1 on Sundays) in hopes of garnering at least 150,000 subscribers.
Mark Stern, publisher of entertainment weeklies, said the idea for the Press came from the Detroit Media Partnership's decision to cut back Detroit News and Free Press home deliveries from seven days to three last spring.
The new paper is just north of Detroit, in a building once occupied by the Royal Oak Tribune building. That paper, now the Daily Tribune, is co-located with its Journal Register Co. sister daily The Macomb Daily, about 23 miles east, in Mount Clemens.
