New Editors at Mich. Newspapers

By: Tony Dearing, editor of The Bay City Times, has been appointed editor of The Flint Journal. Replacing him as editor of the Times will be John P. Hiner, that newspaper's metro editor.

The papers announced the changes Tuesday.

Dearing, 49, replaces former Journal editor Paul M. Keep, who this month succeeded D. Gunnar Carlson as editor of The Muskegon Chronicle. Carlson retired in January.

Dearing started his professional career as an 18-year-old sports reporter and has worked at daily newspapers in Michigan for more than 30 years.

He said the Journal will continue playing a constructive role in the community and keep being responsive to readers.

"I look forward to getting to know the people of this community, and listening to them," Dearing said.

Hiner, 45, the Times' metro editor for 12 years, will be replaced by Kelly Adrian Frick, 36, the paper's enterprise editor.

Hiner said he will work to continue building a positive relationship between the Times and its community.

"I expect this paper will be part of an ongoing discussion with our readers on how to make things better in our community," he said.

Advance Publications owns the Bay City, Flint and Muskegon newspapers.
